Across the globe, lion populations have been decimated to just over half of what they were three decades ago, resulting in their recent "Vulnerable" categorization on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Further declines are projected across Africa stemming from a combination of habitat loss, retaliatory killing following livestock depredation, and prey depletion.
Our Objectives
Monitor lion populations and prey dynamics
Monitor lion populations and prey dynamics
Conduct comprehensive studies on lion demographics, habitat use, and population trends, while assessing prey availability and resource selection within TCA to better understand the drivers of population changes
Assess lion occupancy via camera traps
Assess lion occupancy via camera traps
Deploy strategically placed camera traps to gather continuous data on lion presence, distribution, and interactions within TCA, ensuring a more accurate understanding of their ecological footprint.
Track lion movements with GPS collars
Track lion movements with GPS collars
Fit GPS collars on adult lions in each pride to analyze their movements, hunting behavior, and interactions with the environment, while mitigating human-lion conflicts through real-time tracking.
Restore degraded lands for connectivity
Restore degraded lands for connectivity
Collaborate with local communities to rehabilitate overgrazed areas through planned grazing, improving habitat connectivity between Tsavo East and Tsavo West, benefiting both prey and predator populations.
