Across the globe, lion populations have been decimated to just over half of what they were three decades ago, resulting in their recent "Vulnerable" categorization on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Further declines are projected across Africa stemming from a combination of habitat loss, retaliatory killing following livestock depredation, and prey depletion.
Our Goals
Restore the prey base for lion.

Restore the prey base for lion.
An artificially low prey base:depleted by humans via bushmeat poaching, almost certainly
compromises the unmet potential for TCA to function as a hub of lion conservation. We aim to
enhance the prey base of lions via reduced bushmeat poaching through snare removal and community engagement.
Reduce human-lion conflict.

Reduce human-lion conflict.
We are utilizing innovative technology that includes the integration of GPS collars with Earth
Ranger geofencing system. This technology provides early warnings to herders via mobile
phones messaging about the location of lions. By giving these early warnings, we help deter
lions from attacking livestock, which enhances coexistence between humans and lions.
Recover an iconic lion population.

Recover an iconic lion population.
Increased prey population will have knock-on, positive effects for lion populations in the long
run. This will enhance the capacity of the TCA, to realize its full potential for housing viable
populations of lions, maintaining its status of being among the only four remaining lion
strongholds in East African.
Improve landscape connectivity.

Improve landscape connectivity.
Loss of connectivity due to habitat degradation not only has the potential to reduce population
sizes of wild herbivores in TCA, but it may also force lions to prey on livestock in and around
community-based conservancies and ranches. Prey switching (from wild herbivores to livestock)
may ultimately reduce lion numbers, if local communities and ranches kill lions in retaliation for
livestock depredation.
